The Drunken Master...

About 13 years ago while in my early 20's, I was having one of those deep, philisophical, sentimental and extremely intoxicated conversations with my Dad on the phone. Do you remember the loud, drunk fraternity guy/wanna be philosophy major in college? Even though I never attended college, I was him. I'd been drinking since just after breakfast and in a slurred voice, I was attempting to tell my Dad about this deep seated feeling that I had since I was about 16 years old that tells me that my life is meant for something more than mediocrity. Anyways, he stopped me in mid sentence and then asked me what I was doing at the moment? I said that I was sitting down, drinkin a beer and talking to him. Then he told me to stand up. I protested because I was pretty drunk at the time. But, he persisted and told me again to just stand up real quick and then I could sit back down. He said that he wanted to show me something. I just thought he wanted me to stand up real fast and between my drunken state and the blood rushing to my head, it was almost certain that I would fall on my ass and he would get a good laugh.

Anyways, I stood up, (real slow) sit back down and then asked him what his point was. He then answered my question with a question and asked me what it took for me to stand up? He asked me if I had to think about it or if it took any effort at all? I said, no, "I just did it". And here is where my Dad said something that almost sobered me up on the spot: He said Son, that is when you will be successful. When you just do it. And doing it is the easy part. It's just like standing up. But he said that in order to do it, I would have to become it. And becoming and doing happens at the exact same time.

So let me ask you a question. What are you doing at the moment?

When you become a leader and put yourself out there, you are taking the ideas, concepts and philosophies that you learn about success and make them concrete for you. This happens because as you begin sharing these ideas, concepts and philisophies with others, you are automatically integrating them. It is from expressing it that it becomes you. Or you become it. The bottom line is that we are the ones who get the most value by being leaders and putting ourselves out there. That value is not reserved for those who we lead. We get to constantly remind ourselves of the ideas, concepts and philosophies of success that are familiar to us, and we get to integrate the new ones. You are always the greatest benefactor when you benefit others.
